Monitor not running at 144Hz?

A browser can estimate how often frames are presented, but it cannot certify the panel's electrical scan rate. Use the estimate as a screen, then verify the operating system and the entire GPU-to-monitor signal path.

Answer first

First select the 144Hz option for the correct monitor in Windows Advanced display. If it is absent or the browser estimate stays near 60, verify native resolution, cable and port capability, GPU output, duplication mode, and monitor menu settings.

Run a clean browser estimate

  1. Open MeterSee on the target monitor and start the refresh stability mode.
  2. Use a foreground tab, stop heavy animations or downloads, and sample for several seconds.
  3. Record the estimated rate and frame-time stability rather than judging one momentary value.
  4. Move the browser to another monitor and repeat if the computer has multiple displays.

Verify the selected Windows display mode

  1. Open Settings → System → Display → Advanced display.
  2. Choose the correct monitor from the selector.
  3. Review Desktop mode, Active signal mode, and Choose a refresh rate.
  4. Select the supported 144Hz mode; if the desired rate changes resolution, check the adapter and display specifications.

Trace the complete signal path

  • Use a cable type, version, and length supported by both the GPU port and monitor input for the target resolution and rate.
  • Adapters, docks, KVMs, capture devices, and display duplication can restrict available modes.
  • Confirm the monitor's on-screen menu has the required input mode or overclock option enabled if the manufacturer documents one.
  • Update the graphics driver from the computer or GPU manufacturer only after checking the physical path and Windows mode.

Understand browser and variable-rate limits

RequestAnimationFrame timing is affected by browser scheduling, compositor load, power saving, variable refresh rate, dynamic refresh rate, background throttling, and mixed-monitor configurations. It is a practical estimate, not laboratory equipment.

  • Windows reports 144Hz and motion looks correct, but browser varies slightly: this can be normal scheduling variation.
  • Windows offers only 60Hz: solve the display mode or signal path before blaming the browser.
  • Use a camera or dedicated measurement instrument only when exact physical timing certification is required.
